Statement

My work takes inspiration from worldly places and relics. Beginning with a reference point, I swiftly minimise this and wash the compositions into a placeless and timeless dimension. The paintings could be ghosts or they could be prophecies, the decision is yours.

I use my work to deny linear preconceptions of time. The work reflects upon the cyclical nature of human triumphs and struggles — the futile repetition of construction, dominion, decay and redundancy that is traced by the buildings we leave behind.

Process

My paintings are made using gesso, a natural and ancient material. Gesso provides a surface that can have impressions carved into it with a variety of tools. The surface bears a resemblance to lime-wash plaster, making it a pleasing material to use when studying historic architecture. I build on this carved foundation with layers of oil paint. Diluted with a thinner, the paint seeps into the contours of the carving, bringing it to the fore. Then begins the process of pulling the image out of the background; the challenge of catching the ephemeral spirit of the subject is unique to every piece, making each one a joy to create. The video below demonstrates the way I paint.
